A "wind tree" installed at the COP21 climate talks in Paris. Each tree produces enough energy to light 71 parking spaces (or power one average American home for four months).
Building a Kinetic Wind Sculpture: Inspired by large 20 plus foot rhythmic metal wind sculptures, I've been trying to design and build a small, somewhat similar kind of kinetic wind sculpture using traditional construction methods such as metal and polymer clay.

Kinetic Wind Sculptures are not only fun to make, they are perfect for STEAMing up school campuses and classrooms! Kinetic = Movement and there is something amazing that happens when a student sees their artwork in motion.
Wind sculptures may hold the key. Creators of wind sculptures must study thermodynamics in much the same way a meteorologist would, in order to predict and shape the most artistic ways to capture the various motions of the wind.

“Serpentine was my first completely unpredictable sculpture. (I can't say "random" because technically a machine can't produce truly random motion.) The patterning part is a powered double pendulum. I had played with this type of motion in some of my first hand driven kinetic toys but figuring out a mechanism to drive the motion was a challenge.
Depending upon the height of the sculpture, an 1/8" of an inch wobble at the bearing can translate to a variance of 6 - 8" at the top of a sculpture, allowing it to sway.
The kinetic way of making the world a more beautiful place. Each piece is created by LaPaso along with assistant and friend, John Weber. This limits the number of sculptures they are able to make. Each piece is a work of art and kept to a high standard of quality.
