Inspired by large 20 plus foot rhythmic metal wind sculptures, I've been trying to design and build a small, somewhat similar kind of kinetic wind sculpture using traditional construction methods such as metal and polymer clay.
Depending upon the height of the sculpture, an 1/8" of an inch wobble at the bearing can translate to a variance of 6 - 8" at the top of a sculpture, allowing it to sway.
I make sure the sculpture is perfectly balanced about the axis of rotation so the ball bearing will provide an almost friction free support, and that the air resistance of the sculpture is unbalanced about the axis of rotation so the wind provides an unbalanced force, causing the sculpture to rotate.
